Interview with Bo-hyung Kim : Frank Scott: What is the main principle, idea and inspiration behind your design?. Bo-hyung Kim : The Lighting Cup is designed for multifunctional use. It is useable as a teacup and as a delicate lighting cover for the provided LED saucer. When illuminated, moonlit landscape is illustrated gently on the cup. The landscape illustration of the Lighting Cup revisits the traditional Korean landscape painting (Soomook-sansuwha) in three-dimension which elegantly reflects meditative Asian sentiment with our ‘Affective Artwork’. .Frank Scott: What has been your main focus in designing this work? Especially what did you want to achieve?. Bo-hyung Kim : Potable as a lighting, brightness can be expressed in pottery, Easy Operation .Frank Scott: What are your future plans for this award winning design?. Bo-hyung Kim : Promote sustainable and steady development of new products .Frank Scott: How long did it take you to design this particular concept?. Bo-hyung Kim : It took five months .Frank Scott: Why did you design this particular concept? Was this design commissioned or did you decide to pursuit an inspiration?. Bo-hyung Kim : Originally, I wanted to give ordinary housewares extraordinary function and got the idea on Light Cup through an upset cup. .Frank Scott: Is your design being produced or used by another company, or do you plan to sell or lease the production rights or do you intent to produce your work yourself?. Bo-hyung Kim : It will be produced and sold directly .Frank Scott: Who is the target customer for his design?. Bo-hyung Kim : Economic power women .Frank Scott: What sets this design apart from other similar or resembling concepts?. Bo-hyung Kim : I think this design is unique work .Frank Scott: How did you come up with the name for this design? What does it mean?. Bo-hyung Kim : The landscape illustration of the Lighting Cup revisits the traditional Korean landscape painting (Soomook-sansuwha) in three-dimension which elegantly reflects meditative Asian sentiment with our ‘Affective Artwork’. .Frank Scott: Which design tools did you use when you were working on this project?. Bo-hyung Kim : The lighting ceramic cup is usable as a teacup and as a delicate lighting cover for the provided LED saucer. Therefore, it should have thinner walls (2~3mm) than normal ceramic cups for better light transmittance. There was a difficulty in making a ceramic cup with thin walls because the cup shape was distorted during the manufacturing process .Frank Scott: Who did you collaborate with for this design? Did you work with people with technical / specialized skills?. Bo-hyung Kim : no .Frank Scott: What is the role of technology in this particular design?. Bo-hyung Kim : The light is turned on and off with a touch sensor and is powered by a rechargeable battery that supports a Micro-USB connection. .Frank Scott: What are some of the challenges you faced during the design/realization of your concept?. Bo-hyung Kim : The lighting ceramic cup is usable as a teacup and as a delicate lighting cover for the provided LED saucer. Therefore, it should have thinner walls (2~3mm) than normal ceramic cups for better light transmittance. There was a difficulty in making a ceramic cup with thin walls because the cup shape was distorted during the manufacturing process. The problem was overcome through lots of trial and error, which led many know-hows on the process. .Frank Scott: How did you decide to submit your design to an international design competition?.
